there was a flood this week.
not only has my city flooded. but my heart seems to have as well.
some of my friendships have been shaken and seem to barely be bobbing their heads above the water. it happens. its happened before. it'll happen again. but i'll never get used to it.
just when you think you have built your "house" high enough ... the waters come rushing in. and all your stuff is floating. and when all is said and done nothing looks the same as it used to. nothing feels like it did before. and you are left there ... in ankle deep water looking at the life you have built scattered all over the place. and it stinks. literally.
i saw first hand yesterday a family (whom i had never met) who lost everything in the flood waters. they had established a home. it wasn't just a house. it was a home. and now they have nothing. their furniture is gone. their boxes of pictures with memories that were captured are gone. their home is gutted. and i helped gut it. it's a hard thing to do.
but guess what. they are going to be ok. they know they are going to be ok. they lost some things but they are safe. their hearts are broken but they will heal. the wife of the couple got excited about the new color of her bathroom walls and the new tile in her kitchen. she is already looking to the rebuild. she knows it will be better than before.
and so i do the same with my heart. i look at what is to come. i realize the old was good, but the new will be better. i guess we all have to go through some destruction to be able to get to the best that has been made for us.
it's hard to look at things as they are breaking and washing away. but we have to have faith that what is to come is better than what as been. that is what i believe in.
into all lives some rain must fall.
and then the sun will shine again.
