12 hours train ride to rome. overnight. in a little train car with 4 strangers and 4 bunks. interesting. somehow i made it through with no anxiety or stress at all. i even slept. if you know me well, you know that's a miracle!
got to rome on saturday morning and took the subway to the vatican. we didn't get to go inside because it was closed but we did get to hear a little of the mass that was going on. it all went over my head but it was a good experience. we ate our first gelato. which started a bad habit of eating it more than 2 times a day while we were there. we then went to the trevi fountain, the colisseum, and the spanish steps. did all of that in a few hours and honestly a few hours was plenty of time. rome was a little dirty and stinky but it was a wonderful place to visit for a day.
we then took the train to florence. met up with a friend to stay at their apartment. ate trational italian pasta and more getalo. slept straight through the night ... i mean i didn't wake up one time!!! that means i was very tired! toured florence the next day. didn't get to see "the david" because it is closed on monday's but that's ok it was beautiful and could have spent another day there, but we left that night on the train to vernazza.
you HAVE to visit the chinqua terra in italy. you just have to! it is beautiful and relaxing. rick steves says that when he goes there his brain actually goes on vacation with his body and it is so trrue. we stayed there 2 nights and those 2 nights were the first 2 nights in years that i forgot all my worries and just lived. and lived well. it was such a blessing. here is a link to show you more about the area.
after that we went back to switzerland for a night and let kendy and john go out for the first time in 5 weeks on their on without the kids. we had a good time with the kiddos and were happy to let them have some alone time. :)
